To the VANALDEN CAVE/Starting from Trippet Ranch/ Grub & Libations After

This might be NEW for some people. For those who have been asking for a longer hike; let’s try this one!

The Vanalden Cave near Tarzana is a very curious sandstone formation in the Santa Monica Mountains. Vanalden Cave is a gigantic sandstone den about 25’ x 25’ x 50 feet deep. The roof of the cave is only a few feet thick. Holes in the ceiling are like windows to the sky that lighten the cave walls, which are covered with intriguing carvings and contemporary paint art.

The hike starts in Trippet Ranch meanders thru oak trees and winding trails; around several rock formations. The trail is about 6 miles each way. The first 3 miles is a little strenuous, but a good workout. The weather is supposed to be a nice 75 degrees, which helps. The last 3 miles the trail gets easier.

We’ll take breaks along the way. We’ll stop at the cave for at least a half hour to rest / relax / snack/ Explore!

On our return we’ll be passing by the famous Eagle Rock. We’ll take a poll to see if anyone wants a break.

If timing is right, we’ll be making our way down as the sun is setting. Sometimes there is a pack of deer that roams the meadows.

Sunset is 5:26 pm.

The whole hike should take around 6 or so hours at a relaxed pace.

Restrooms: There is a restroom that has running water in the main parking lot. There is an outhouse at “the Hub” which is the midway point.

Water: Bring 3 – 4 Liters of water, Snacks, Sunscreen, a Hat; the usual stuff.

DIRECTIONS:
From the Ventura Freeway (101), exit at Topanga Canyon Boulevard, drive south over the crest of the mountains and proceed three miles to Entrada Road (not Entrado!) and turn left. Keep to the left at every opportunity until you reach the park's main parking lot (about one mile)

From Pacific Coast Highway, travel north on Topanga Canyon Boulevard, pass the post office at the center of "town," then turn right on Entrada Road. Keep to the left at every opportunity until you reach the park's main parking lot (about one mile).

Parking: $10.00 (exact change) in Park. There is some street parking (free) outside of the park on the road.
