After playing with Bbedit, Crimson Editor, NetBeans, Notepad++, PHPstorm, TextWrangler and more (some are free, some you pay for), I’ve settled into Brackets - its’ nice and light yet full featured and customizable.  Works on Linux, OSi, Mac, Chrome, Android, Windows etc to the best of my knowledge - nice and easy to use.

also you can customize how it looks - i like this old fashion vintage monitor look - it makes me smile :D

I use Netbeans. It's free, has nice code completion, control/command-click to look up function declarations, integrated debugging (especially with Chrome), database browsing, plugins. For large projects it makes my life easy.

Prior to using Netbeans, I was simply using vi on the Mac (or Cygwin if I have to use Windows). For small projects it's super light, fast, and I know it really well. It'll also show line numbers if you tell it to.

I am a long time Sublime Text user it’s great, I am worried about it version 3 is taking forever. Several weeks ago I decided to give Atom a try just for the hell of it and the transition is seamless and I am really liking it and the available packages, and it’s free!

SublimeText3 $59.00 and it does all that and then some. I don’t like IDE’s like PHPStorm, they have too much bloat and too many features I don’t use getting in the way.

Subject: [php-49] PHP editor?

If I am sending too many messages today, I apologize, but it's too hot
for yard work outside!

My OS is Windows 7 Professional. I am using WordPad to write my code.
Basically this works fine, but there is no line numbering.  So when I
get a PHP error referring to a line number, I have to carefully count
down to approximately the right line. (Approximately because the error
may not correspond to the line number.)

Can anyone recommend a free editor for PHP that would not only display
line numbers, but also show basic dumb errors such as a $ instead of $
at the beginning for variable name, missing ; at the end of a statement,
etc. Also hopefully mismatched pairs of characters such as () [] {} <>
(either one more of one side than the other, or the wrong character such
as [ instead of (. } oops! That should be )?

I tried using the source code option in the developer's option in
Firefox with code that was a PHP script with an imbedded section of HTML
for a small form.  The source code display only showed the HTML part of
the program and none of the PHP.  Stupid and totally useless!

Thanks,
Bob Fleming
