Create a Working Memory Palace (San Francisco Walk)

Details

In this meetup, we will walk around Golden Gate Park in San Francisco for a couple of hours getting hands on experience creating a memory palace (http://mnemotechnics.org/wiki/Method_of_Loci). We'll memorize all 44 US Presidents in order as we go. The walk lasted 90 minutes last time.

If you've completed your number memorization system, you can also memorize the Presidents' dates in office. If this is your second time taking this walk, you can review your memory palace or add additional data to it like vice presidents and political parties.

This meetup involves a bit of walking, but it's just around the park between the Academy of Sciences and the De Young Museum. Click here (http://goo.gl/maps/rFGJg) to see a map of the area that we will wander around.

Please bring a fully-charged smartphone or other camera if you have one. The camera will be used to photograph the locations of your memory palace. If you don't have a camera of some sort, pen and paper will be fine. I'll bring extra pens and paper as well as a spare camera.

We'll meet at the park. First, I'll show everyone how to use a memory palace, and as a group we can memorize some random items and recite them forwards and backwards. Then we will walk around Golden Gate Park and each person will create a nice, reusable memory palace of about 45 locations. You will be able to use this memory palace for the rest of your life to memorize things, whether the palace is used to store factual knowledge for school or business, or random data for memory competitions.
