http://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/8/d/6/a/600_284256202.jpeg October is WebRTC month at SFHTML5! We will kick it off with an evening event with three talks. Expert speakers Chris Wilson, Ben Strong, and Dan Ristic will be on hand to give you an overview, show you how to use WebRTC in your web apps, and give you an opportunity to ask your questions. A follow-up hands-on weekend workshop is also planned. Refer to the Meetup event page (https://www.meetup.com/sfhtml5/events/139666482/) for more details.
Talk #1: "Introduction to WebRTC Apps" with Chris Wilson
WebRTC implements open standards for peer-to-peer communication of audio, video and data. WebRTC APIs have been implemented across Chrome and Firefox on mobile and desktop, meaning there are now over one billion end points.
This session explains how to get started on building a WebRTC app:
• Using getUserMedia() to get access to user-generated video and audio
• Integrating WebRTC with Canvas, WebGL and Web Audio
• What is signaling and why do I need it?
• Getting to grips with RTCPeerConnection for audio and video communication
• Using RTCDataChannel for peer-to-peer data communication for file sharing, gaming and more
• The easy way: apps, platforms, libraries, and abstraction layers
• Security and privacy
About the Speaker
Chris Wilson is an Open Web Platform Developer Advocate working on Chrome. He began working on web browsers in 1993 when he co-authored the original Windows version of NCSA Mosaic, went on to Microsoft to work on Internet Explorer for fifteen years, and joined Google in 2010. He has a particular interest in enabling awesome user experiences on the web platform, and is a long-time participant in various web standards working groups. In his free time, he enjoys photography and hiking with his wife and daughters, and scuba diving in the tropics as well as the chilly waters of Puget Sound as a PADI Assistant Instructor. Talk 2: "A Practical Guide to Building WebRTC Apps" with Ben Strong
Transforming the promise of WebRTC into a reliable solution takes more than writing a few lines of javascript. This session dives into a range of considerations you’ll need to address. What does the browser provide - and not provide? (Spoiler alert: things left to the web developer to figure out include signaling between peers, session management, UI controls, TURN, STUN, and more.) We’ll also cover the design choices required as well as common client- and server-side components you’ll need to build. And no practical guide to WebRTC apps would be complete without addressing the hottest topic in WebRTC adoption: mobile.
About the Speaker
Ben Strong is CEO of vLine, a leading provider of WebRTC tools and infrastructure. He's a die-hard WebRTC fanatic who has been been building WebRTC apps since Google's first code drop over two years ago, and he has the scars to show it.

Talk #3: "WebRTC Data Channels" with Dan Ristic
The data channel is a powerful addition to the real-time capabilities of transferring data packets around the web. In this session Dan will cover the basics of how to setup and use the data channel. He will also cover the best use cases for the data channel and also the pitfalls you will encounter along the way.
About the Speaker
Dan Ristic is a Developer Evangelist at PubNub, a leading provider of real-time networking technologies. He is passionate about front-end engineering and tries to push the web to its limits.
