WebRTC Dev Hack Day

Details

About the WebRTC Dev Hack Day

This is a one-day hackathon to enable you to build a complete WebRTC app. You have two options: work on your own app, or follow our codelab (http://bitbucket.org/webrtc/codelab). Either way, we’ll have seasoned experts on hand to help out.

Our battle-tested codelab has been built as a code repository with instructions in a readme. You should be able to follow it on your own, but let the experts know if anything isn’t clear. We’d also appreciate it if you could raise issues (even better, write patches!) if you find bugs with the codelab or want to suggest improvements.

We’d also appreciate if you could file any WebRTC API bugs and feature requests at http://bit.ly/webrtcfeedback . The codelab is currently oriented to Chrome, but with a bit of tweaking can be done with Firefox as well.

Prerequisites

WebRTC and Web Audio Resources (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1idl_NYQhllFEFqkGQOLv8KBK8M3EVzyvxnKkHl4SuM8/edit) has links to tutorials, documentation and demos. A great place to start is the 2013 Google I/O WebRTC video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2HzZkd2A40).

Basic knowledge:

• HTML, CSS and JavaScript

• git (http://git-scm.com/)

• Chrome DevTools (https://developers.google.com/chrome-developer-tools/)

• Experience of Node.js (http://nodejs.org/) and socket.io (http://socket.io/) would also be useful but not required

Hardware:

• The instructions in this codelab assume you are using Mac OS, Linux or Windows. Unless you know what you're doing, it's probably easier not to attempt this codelab from a Chromebook (yet).

• Integrated or plug-in webcam.

• It would also be useful to have an Android device with Google Chrome installed in order to try out the examples on mobile. To run WebRTC APIs on Chrome for Android, you must enable WebRTC from the chrome://flags page.
