Join us for the 2nd annual Belgian Student night with special guest Mathias Bynens (https://twitter.com/mathias)! This will be an evening of Belgian tech and startup inspiration. Over a hundred students from Howest University of West-Flanders (http://www.howest.be/) (Belgium) will be invading San Francisco again, so we thought it would be a great time to host another special SFHTML5 event. In addition to the main talk, we will have talks by the students and several Howest alumni. There will be Belgian beer by Healthy Spirits and great Belgian food by Vive La Tarte.

About Howest University

Howest is widely known for being the best university in Belgium when it comes to Web design. It features courses like New Media and Communication Technology and Digital Design & Development.

Featured Presentation: Unicode ♥ JavaScript (Mathias Bynens)

In this presentation, Mathias will take a look at the various ways JavaScript relies on Unicode, what the consequences are for JavaScript developers, and how ECMAScript 6 will make our lives a bit easier in this regard.

First off, Mathias will explain the basics of Unicode. Once that’s out of the way, Mathias will talk a little bit about different character encodings, only to determine the internal character encoding that JavaScript uses internally, which is kind of a mixture between UCS-2/UTF-16. Then, Mathias will explore the various consequences of JavaScript exposing “characters” according to UCS-2/UTF-16, and explain why it can be problematic.

Finally, he will present robust ECMAScript 5-compatible workarounds to the issues encountered, and explain how ECMAScript 6 will make it easier to support full Unicode in JavaScript strings.

Additional Talks

A Brave New Web (The De Mey Brothers)
In this look, Howest alumni Michiel and Gilles De Mey will take a quick look at the the future of the web and explain the basics of Web Components and how you can leverage them to create a better web for everyone. First they will take a quick look at how far we've come and what technologies are available today in terms of reusable components. Then they will go on to explain some of the basics including templating, shadow DOM and how we can easily leverage those APIs to create reusable components. Finally they will show a quick demo about how you can create a component of your own!
