Smart Assistants, Anticipatory Computing and the slow Death of Search

Details

This month the topic is about the latest innovations in mobile apps and sensors that provide us Smart Assistants. The Anticipatory Computing movement is gaining momentum, every week you now see a new Personal Assistant app on the market. We are seeing some consolidation in the market too, with the likes of Apple, Google and Yahoo making some interesting acquisitions.

Come here from Kass and Dan about this exciting space. The talk will be followed by a group discussion (chaired by John Fagan) that muses on whether these apps could be the death of search.

Game of Phones: context is the new king! by Kass & Dan @Plusocial (http://www.plusocial.co/)

An overview of context in search and mobile apps: how products are moving forward from user inputted searches, and are now beginning to leverage contextual data to proactively deliver relevant information and facilitate discovery.

Contextual Search

• What is it? And why is it going to be more important in future?

• Serendipity. What does it mean? And what is the big vision?

• How can apps leverage context? What makes an app the perfect tool to paint a picture of your current ‘context’ and learn about who you are, what you like etc.

• Why would I need a smart assistant/contextual search app? ‘An app which means you can use apps less’.

• How are mobile apps perfect for contextual search? I.e data etc

• An everyday usage example. Business trip to London, including booking flights, flight tracking, traffic conditions, tube directions, social profiles of business contacts. ‘Leave early messages’, grab lunch etc.

• The big players: Siri, Google now, Yahoo… acquisitions/acqui-hire (Gorkr, Donna, etc..)

bridge into:-

• The future? (possibilities and challenges) Data problems and constrictions, the balance between helping and being too intrusive.
