What we’re about

This is a book club for people who want to read not just 20th century modern classics, but also off-the-beaten-path, lesser known novels and modern novels in translation (although we'll still read plenty of novels from authors you heard of!). Book choices will focused on novels originally written from the end of the 19th century through to the mid-1980s. We have a good group going so far, with members coming from all over NYC, so you do not have to live in Williamsburg to join! (and you definitely don't need to read the whole book to join in the conversation) Come along if you want a lively discussion about a book you read in a chill bar!

Meetup One Hundred and Thirty Five: The Werewolf of Paris

Hey team - For spook season, we will be reading an American take on the classic monster legend of the werewolf in Guy Endore's The Werewolf of Paris. Published in 1933, this Gothic horror novel has been described by some as the "Dracula novel" for werewolf fiction. Told in a frame story, where an anonymous American working on his doctoral research in Paris, upon discovering a manuscript in the hands of some trash-pickers, then narrates the tale of Bertrand Caillet, the werewolf. Set during the tumultuous events of the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune of 1870–71, this quasi-historical/horror "manuscript" tells the story of Caillet from his inauspicious beginning to his tragic end, including his supernatural transformations that facilitate his sadistic lust for blood.

The most recently published version is just under 300 pages.

PS. It might not be a bad idea to peruse the Wiki pages for the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune of 1870-71. Just to get more familiar with the events the novel is set in.
