The topic for this meetup will be education. A lot of the country's public schools are struggling, particularly in poorer neighborhoods. A lot of people feel that even the better schools are not doing a good job of educating. Some suggested remedies have included the following:
- More standardized testing, including holding schools and teachers accountable for their students' performance
- Provide vouchers to help parents pay for sending their childern to private schools
- Restructure the funding of public schools away from the local and toward the state and federal level
We will discuss whether these and other suggestions would help or exacerbate the problems.
The following questions will also be open to discussion:
To what extent schools save children who come from a destructive home environment?
What is the role of schools in teaching morality?
Oh ya she wrote a book called "Death & Life of the Great American School System."
I also watched. This was a terrific interview. I thought Diane Ravitch and Jon Stewart both brought up good points.
