This trip will be based on weather. I am not a rainy-day hiker so if you RSVP, please stay tuned for my updates based on weather and have a backup plan. I can stand some sprinkles though but I’m not fond of steady rain or downpours. Since I plan on camping out in Flag, I’ll probably have a backup hike and you can join me on that if you wish.
Stats:
Hiking start time: 7:45am – 8am depending on who is coming from where. If we are all camping, I’d like to start 7:45 or earlier if people are up. If people are driving from Phoenix, we can start at 8am sharp.
Distance round-trip: 14.3 miles
Accumulated Elevation Gain: 4430 feet
Average Time round-trip: 7-9 hours
Difficulty: HIGH, for advanced hikers only please
Campsite:
Freidlein Prairie Dispersed Camping area: Access: From Flagstaff drive north on US 180 for about 7 miles to FR 516 (Snowbowl Road). Drive approximately 2.25 miles on this paved road to a dirt road, FR 522, and turn right. The Dispersed Camping area begins about a quarter mile from Snowbowl Road. If anyone knows about dispersed camping closer to the Inner Basin, please let me know. Thanks!
Carpooling:
Campers: either tell me that you’ll meet me at the trailhead or meet me at Bagel Gourmet at 6:30 pm on Friday. Just tell me which.
Non-campers: I doubt you’ll want to carpool from Phoenix to make this early morning hike but if you do, please meet at 5am Bagel Gourmet 16845 N. 29th Ave #4 Phoenix 85053 located on the West end of the Fry's Shopping Center at I-17 and Bell Road. You won’t have too much time to gas up, get food, or other so please be prepared to high-tail it up to Flag. :)

Other Info:
If no tendons are bothering me, I’m a moderate steady-paced hiker (about 2 mph I guess) who doesn’t take that many breaks. My legs will start to tighten up and I lose my momentum if I stop too many times or for too long. I do plan to eat lunch at the top which will take me a good half hour. Please bring all the normal stuff: plenty of water, rain jacket, food, and a smile. :)
I’ll email my phone number out prior to the hike even though I get not-so-great cell reception. In other words, please make sure you know how to get where we are before you leave home (like in the old days before cell phones).
Hope to see you there!
Patricia
