July 2011 - Living With Complexity - Don Norman

This location is shown only to members

It's been a while between bookclubs, but it's time to get hold of your next UX book and start reading as bookclub returns in July.

We're reading Living with Complexity by Don ('The Don') Norman.

Don's talk about the content of this book sparked a lot of conversation at the recent UXLX conference and I'm sure we'll have lots to talk about when we get together to discuss it at UX Bookclub, London.

Hope to see you at bookclub soon!

Leisa

PS: as ever, please only take a ticket if you REALLY intend to read the book and come along to bookclub. dropping out at the last minute robs someone else of the opportunity to prepare for and attend bookclub.

I've signed up for both days. Would prefer Tuesday. If I end up going to both I'll cancel Thursday.

I've mentioned this before but I'll ask again. Why is it that I *never* receive the first invites but only an email saying "this meeting is full".

Not a great user experience ....

hi Steve, sorry to hear you're not getting the emails... I'm not sure why this is the case but I agree it's not a great user experience. Meetup in general is a pretty bad user experience and I'm working on a replacement which will hopefully be better. Stay tuned. Do you use Twitter? I tweet when tix are released. @uxbcldn

I'm with Steve on this one. it seems that invites always arrive after the list is full and I fail to get a place. this is the third time that this has happened. It is really disappointing.....

Nathan/Steve/Everyone else with this problem (or interested in solving it):
    1. do you get *any* notification of the even being created? Or nothing until after it is sold out?
    2. can you tell me when you first got notification of this particular event? (this includes ppl other than steve/nathan)
    3. people who *did* get a ticket, how did you find out that tickets were available in time to get a ticket?

It's worth going here to make sure your communication settings are sorted: http://www.meetup.com/uxbcldn/settings/
I have mine set to receive all notifications and reminders. I got Leisa's original posting about this meetup on 2 June.

Get nothing until sold out - first received a message about Don Norman today entitled "Meetup Reminder" (!)

    See above

Nope my settings are all present and correct including the one that says

"a member announces a Meetup (you will still get announcements from Organizers)"

Ah, I have a hunch I know what's going on. From the notification settings page it looks like you're only notified if someone "takes an action on a Meetup I am going to, commented on, or that I am marked "attended" for" -- I had voted to read the Don Norman book, so I'm assuming that's why I was notified when the meetup was arranged. Had you marked "count me in" for that book ahead of the meetup being arranged? http://www.meetup.com/uxbcldn/#making

Also, looks like the most important communication setting is to make sure you're subscribed to the mailing list. Looking at my email, that's where I got the announcement about this meetup from Leisa

To be honest, I don't recall getting the 'vote to read' email either, so no I didn't mark the book as "count me in".

thanks everyone for the great discussion at bookclub last night - I hope you enjoyed the evening. Apologies for the lack of pizza - hope you weren't too starving :/ We usually do have something organised to eat so I'll double check that next time to make sure we're all set.

thanks again - really enjoyed seeing you all!
