Re: [vegan-512] Some action needed

I don't know if you've noticed, but very few people want "education" crammed down their throats. If they *ask* for information, that is a good sign they want to know more. If they *ask* why you're vegan, that is a good opening. But... I'll give you a few examples of groups whose "education" I have no interest in: people who think global warming is a hoax; people who feel that the rich are taxed too much; people who feel that gay couples shouldn't have the same right to marriage as heterosexuals. To most individuals, starting off from the "I have to educate you" standpoint is very insulting -- it's a judgment. You're basically calling them ignorant and they're unlikely to distinguish between your "education" and the groups I mentioned (or pick your favorite group that you disagree with).

Education comes at all different levels. Giving someone a fantastic veggie burger doesnt necessarily help people make the connection. Sometimes bloody slaughterhouse videos do the trick and sometimes it might be videos of animals jumping for joy.

The trick, imho, is to be able to judge what issues are important to the person you're speaking with and give the the right information in the correct dosage to help them along the path.

I liken anyone who isn't vegan to a ship that has run aground. It's not your job to float the boat although if you do that's great. It's your job to move one grain of sand. The next person might move another. Eventually the boat will slide off that sandbar.

...Very well said.

I have to admit it irks me a little how much a few overbearing people can sour the public perception of what it means to be vegan.

When people at work ask me what I'm heating up in the microwave it often can lead to a friendly casual conversation about how I follow a plant based diet.  As soon as someone asks, "Oh are you Vegan?" it becomes a minefield of worrying whether I should explain that I'm not going to give them a case of the guilties over what they're wearing or eating.

I'd like people of all backgrounds to feel welcome in approaching a plant based lifestyle to whatever degree they're ready for.  It's often a gradual process.  (It was for me at least.)

...Inducing guilt in others is off-putting and turns people away from the movement.  It makes people think of vegans as childish elitists who care less about animals and more about their need to feel superior.

Soooooo next time you (and by "you" I really mean Ray) might be feeling the itch to educate non-vegans please take a minute to watch this video and consider how you are being perceived.

Does a confrontational approach really work that well?  ...Maybe it's better to chillax and show people how to make some good plant based recipes.

Why did he call the entire group dishonest? A couple of misunderstandings:
1. He thought Ray was saying he posted comments under several different names to increase the impact of his responses. (Ray addressed this in his reply.)
2. He thought Ray was an organizer and/or speaks for the group -- which he doesn't. (Ray did not address this in his reply.)

I don't know that he's still listening, but ... basically, my impression of this group (based on attending the meetups for several years) is that the core purpose of this group is to be able to dine with & socialize with like-minded people. It's a very tolerant group, in general. We have members who are vegan because they care about animals, vegan for health reasons, vegetarian, pescatarian, and even carnivores. I think it's admirable that some group members are activists & certainly sharing information about that activism should be OK. However, I've also seen some intolerance on the email list (never at the actual meetups - it's usually people who don't generally show up), and some people who'd never been to a meetup have left as a result. Whether they would have ever shown up is questionable, but it would be nice if we didn't drive people away by being overbearing. And if you're generally overbearing, maybe you could mention that you don't speak for the group in all of these communications, because it's a common misconception.

Just my opinion.

In that case, I'm leaving your meetup, because I would rather not break bread with dishonest people.

After reading this and then going to the site to see the pig roast they are having I decided to spend a bit of time sharing my thoughts.. MANY times with different names on their site as well as leaving messages on their voice mail(all addys below). I urge you to share your truth if you wish.  Im left with many question, the biggest being; How many other things does your church do that are completely out of integrity with the teachings of the book they say they study and live by, and what do you think Jesus would have to say about a 44 yr old tradition as well as eating pig flesh that is STRICTLY forbidden in the Bible???  Certainly this is not he only church to do such horrifically hypocritical things.. Have at it.
In Peace
