Last night I said that the Google Analytics code should be placed in the footer, but I misremembered. It should actually be in the header, which is what Google recommends and where the Google Analytics for WordPress plugin places it.
You should put synchronous JavaScript in the footer, but the Google Analytics JavaScript is asynchronous, so it won't delay the loading of your pages.
