Finland in Perspective with Peter von Bagh

Finland in Perspective with Peter von Bagh

Details

Bordered by Norway, Sweden, and Russia, Finland is a multilingual Nordic country known for its impressive natural landscapes, reindeer, spas, white summer nights, stellar education system, and cutting edge cell phone technology.

Whether you're interested in Finland's role in the EU, how it has been shaped culturally and historically by its neighbors, a fan of Nokia, or just plain curious, join YPIA for a cultural and film presentation on Finland by legendary filmmaker Peter von Bagh. Known for his prestigious films and books which bring everyday Finland to life, Von Bagh will visit Washington DC in his role as the Artistic Director of the II Cinema Ritrovato Festival.

In Remembrance, Von Bagh meditates on the cultural transformation of his home town Oulu from a booming sea port in the 1950s to Nokia's technology hub in the 21st century, while the documentary Splinters explores the biographies of the artistic Aho- Soldan family. Highlights include the stories of eminent novelist Juhani Aho, his wife Venny Soldan-Brofeldt, the first notable Finnish female painter, and their children Heikki, Björn and Claire, all leaders in the fields of documentary films and art photography. Afterwards, gauging group interest, we'll converge at Clydes for a post-film discussion and refreshments.

Please note that admission to the cultural event is free, but participants are responsible for paying their own refreshment costs and encouraged to bring cash for the post-film discussion. The YPIA Program Lead will provide the cultural context for this event. We hope to see you there!
