See all- IN-PERSON & ONLINE PREVIEW: Ford's Theatre, "One Destiny," & the Peterson HouseFord's Theatre, Washington, DC
To honor the legacy of President Abraham Lincoln, this two-part event includes an online preview and an in-person tour and play that focuses on the events and people of April 14th, 1865, at Ford's Theatre and the Petersen House in Washington, DC.
Part 1 is an online preview on April 23rd. Part 2 is the in-person tour on April 27th, including tickets to Ford's Theatre Museum, the play One Destiny, the Peterson House, and an optional lunch. Full details below!
One of the most visited and revered sites in the nation’s capital, Ford’s Theatre reopened its doors in 1968, more than 100 years after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Operated through a partnership between Ford’s Theatre Society and the National Park Service, Ford’s Theatre is the premier destination in the nation’s capital to explore and celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s life and legacy.
ONLINE PREVIEW: TUESDAY, APRIL 23, 7-8:30pm: Registered attendees will receive the Zoom link on the day of to join MaryBeth and Mark online for a preview of the in-person tour.
On April 14, 1865, most of Washington were celebrating Lee's surrender and the end of war: but not everyone. We will look at how John Wilkes Booth spent the day on April 14th: the day he changed history by murdering President Lincoln in his theatre box at Ford's Theatre. We will consider the roles of key players that night: the actor Harry Hawk and theatre manager Harry Ford (who are in the play One Destiny), and Laura Keane, the lead actress. Other people deserve our attention, including John Miles and Joe Simms, two black freedmen who worked the "flies" of the theatre. In addition, we'll meet Ned Spangler, who had the misfortune of interacting with Booth that night. We'll look at the aftermath of the event, including the futures of the Ford brothers and Ford Theatre.
This preview is designed so that, on the day of the in-person tour, attendees will have a better understanding of the place, the play, and importantly, some of the people.
IN-PERSON EVENT ON SATURDAY, APRIL 27TH:
MEETUP TIME: 9:00-9:15am outside Ford's Theatre, 511 Tenth Street. Once we meet up, we'll walk down Baptist Alley to the back of the theatre to see the stage door by which Booth escaped after assassinating President Lincoln.
9:50am, the Museum: We will enter the theatre before 10am, our ticket time, and tour the museum that contains artifacts from Lincoln’s presidency, Civil War milestones, and the assassination conspiracy led by John Wilkes Booth.
11am, Ford's Theatre: We have tickets to watch the 11am production of One Destiny.
The Petersen House: Once we finish watching the play, we will go across the street to The Petersen House, where the mortally wounded Lincoln was carried. Inside the Petersen House, we will see the bedroom where Lincoln died and, if open, the Aftermath Exhibits.
AFTERWARDS: If people would like to lunch after the tour, we will go to Wok & Roll restaurant (located at the site of the Surratt Boarding House).
