Debate: THW Defund the BBC
Details
Should we Defund The BBC?
Those who argue that the British Broadcasting Corporation should be defunded claim the licence fee is outdated in an era of subscription platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. They also point to past scandals, including the failure to address abuse by Jimmy Savile and the controversy surrounding Huw Edwards, arguing that such incidents have damaged public trust and accountability.
Supporters argue that, despite these serious failings, the BBC remains a vital public service broadcaster, providing impartial news, educational content, and distinctive British programming. They contend that defunding it would undermine high-quality journalism and weaken an institution that continues to play an important cultural and democratic role in the UK.
