Previous Winners
Grand Prize - Real-Money Carnival Games
The Miranda Brothers' Carnival Games app took top prize at the last Betable Hackathon. Carnival Games cleverly repurposed Betable's slot machine API to facilitate real-money wagers on a classic carnival crane game. By winning the Grand Prize, Edgar & Cesar have shown that even a small team can compete in the gambling industry when they utilize Betable's platform. Not only is their game going live soon for real money, but the Miranda Brothers' game and story received attention from the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/18/technology/tech-industry-sets-its-sights-on-gambling.html?nl=todaysheadlines&emc=edit_th_20130218&_r=2&)! Congrats Edgar and Cesar!
Second Prize - Big Fish Aquarium
Mario Izquierdo, Victor Mendiluce, and Kyle grabbed second prize with their Fishville-style Big Fish Aquarium game. They adapted our real-money platform to fit right into the gameplay: you pay (buy in) for each fish egg, and it has a chance to die or hatch into a fish (the payout). Each fish has variations that are rare and more valuable, and the player is awarded cash equal to the value of their new fish.
*Note: Big Fish Aquarium is not related in any way to Betable partner Big Fish Casino.
Most Innovative Prize - Gambling Bugs
Ina Yosun Chang and her team created an augmented reality gambling game where you bet on two AR spiders that would battle on your hand or table. Chang used Betable's API to determine outcomes for combat sequences and make it a real-money game of chance.
Honorable Mention - Tweet Roulette
One of the crowd favorites at the hackathon was Tweet Roulette. Creator Ryan Gerard hooked up a Betable roulette backend to the Twitter API, giving you the ability to bet by tweeting "bet {$amount} on {numbers, even or color} at @tweet_chance. Tweet Roulette would then send you back the result of your bet!
