BashoChats 001 - DTrace on the Erlang VM and Distributed RPC with Storm

Hi All -

I'm thrilled to announce the inaugural BashoChats!

BashoChats is (or will be, rather) a monthly, intimate gathering at BashoWest (http://basho.com/blog/technical/2011/06/07/BashoWest-is-all-new-and-we-have-desks-for-you/) to discuss issues, trends, and ideas in and around the areas of distributed systems and large-scale computing. Basho will provide the pizza, beer, and projector. You bring the hard questions.

DTrace and the Erlang VM

The Erlang VM is winning over the hearts and minds of many developers because it makes a solid foundation for distributed, fault-tolerant systems. But peering inside a running system is a less-than-trivial task. To that end, there is some exciting work being done by various parties to instrument the VM using DTrace.

Andy will take us through the state of DTrace and the Erlang VM and explain how to instrument running systems and optimize for performance.

Computing Reach Using Storm Distributed RPC

Storm (https://github.com/nathanmarz/storm) is a distributed realtime computation system originally built by Nathan Marz and the team at BackType. Now at Twitter (thanks to an acquisition (http://blog.backtype.com/2011/07/backtype-has-been-acquired-by-twitter/)), Storm is being used to power various pieces of Twitter's massive infrastructure.

In this talk, Nathan will shed some light on Storm basics and share in depth details on how Storm computes reach using distributed RPC.
