Self-Study Turkish Meeting

Merhaba arkadaşlarım! (Hello my friends!)

As Patricia unfortunately is no longer able to be Organizer of this Meetup, I have assumed the reins, so to speak :) I believe that we have a great group and a lot of motivation, so I would like us to continue our friendships as well as our mutual quest to learn and speak Turkish!!

Let us begin where we started, at Troya, on Clement in SF. We will plan regular Meetups bi-monthly, in order to keep the momentum going in our learning - the venue will alternate between Troya and other venues in the Bay Area.

After much thought as to study material, I believe it will be best for all of us to stay in sync with what we are learning - so that we can discuss it without being lost or overwhelmed.

I have tried EVERY study guide for Turkish there is (Rosetta Stone, Pimsleur, etc) and for me the best guide for someone with a busy work schedule is "Teach Yourself Turkish Complete", by Asuman Celen Pollard & David Pollard http://www.amazon.com/Yourself-Turkish-Complete-Course-Audiopackage/dp/0071434232/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1350152189&sr=8-1&keywords=teach+yourself+turkish+complete. The book with 2 audio CDs are only $21 on Amazon.

The lessons are short and succinct, and learning 2 units bi-weekly is quite realistic. I highly recommend that members buy the package with audio CDs, as listening to the correct pronunciation is a big part of learning Turkish properly. I have copied the Introduction and Unit 1 for now, to get things going. These lessons are copyrighted and not for sale without the permission of the authors. You can find the lessons by clicking on the "More" tab at the top of the Meetup page, there will be a drop-down menu, and you click on "Files".

Please review the Introduction and Unit 1, and do the short quizzes/problems at the end of Unit 1, and practice the dialogue at the end of Unit 1. It is a great way to get started!

While I hate to be a bummer - attendance and consideration is a priority of mine. Members who RSVP and do not show up without canceling or contacting me by phone or email will be removed from the group after 3 no-shows. It's fine to cancel at the last minute. But I must make reservations for our events, and it puts me in a bad spot when members do not show at all and do not cancel. Thank you
