Description from Push Festival Website:
Born in Flames is a pioneering work of feminist sci-fi cinema shot in 1983 with low-fi guerrilla filmmaking aesthetics that combine experimental docufiction techniques and archival news footage in a gritty, unvarnished portrayal of activism and rebellion. This genre-defying indictment of patriarchy unfolds in an alternate United States, a decade after a socialist revolution. Disillusioned by its unfulfilled promises, groups of militant women band together to rise against lingering injustice through non-violent protest and radical uprisings. Their primary target: the mainstream media, which they seek to commandeer as a tool for liberation in a dramatic act of resistance.
Heralded as a time capsule of pre-gentrification New York, Born in Flames exposes the shortcomings of progressive movements that ignore intersectional oppression, crafting a punk-rock manifesto that continues to resonate as an incisive critique of institutional power and systemic inequality.
The screening will be followed by an in-person Q&A with Lizzie Borden, offering audiences a rare opportunity to engage with the visionary filmmaker.
Film is at 6pm
