South Bay Fishing in the City
Since 1995 South Bay Fishing in the City has taught thousands of local children how to fish through in-school programs and fishing clinics at various Santa Clara County and San Jose City parks. The foundation of this program is to teach children to fish and provide the knowledge and tools needed to return and fish on their own.
On Community Fishing Days children age 5-15 learn the joys of fishing, and to discover opportunities to fish at public lakes, ponds and streams in their own community. The program also provides children an appreciation of the outdoors, basic environmental awareness, and promotes a sense of stewardship of parks, fishing and the environment as a whole. Thanks to the program’s partners, South Bay Fishing in the City is offered at no cost to the participants (any park entrance fees must be paid).
All events take place from 8:00 to 11:30 AM.
Registration is first come, first serve from 8:00 – 10:00 AM.
There is a maximum number of spots for kids at each event - i.e. the neted area will only safely accomodate a set # of kids - each event will have a designated # of spots depending on lake conditions and safety issues - - - - -
Registration may be closed prior to 10:00AM IF that # is reached
Children must be 5-15 years old.
Participants (children) first go through a clinic on the basics of fishing, including: safety and ethics, knot tying, casting and rigging.
All clinics are taught by our dedicated and knowledgeable volunteer staff.
Children are loaned a rod (a parental ID is required for every two rods loaned), provided bait and tackle and then try their luck at fishing for the remainder of the event!
Parental supervision is mandatory, but we encourage that:
kids be allowed to “do it themselves” – let them do the fishing!
