ABOUT THE TALK:
Modern web backends are becoming increasingly distributed, leveraging different data stores, different micro-services, and replication. The distributed nature of our services comes with a nasty side-effect: Race conditions.
Unique failure modes and opaque nature of remote services make race conditions harder to detect, diagnose, and mitigate. Differing concurrency models in APIs and data stores bring unique considerations for all distributed applications and the elongated timeline of remote requests often makes rare conditions relatively common. Finally, there is often no consistent tooling to create a coherent picture of our application across all its distributed elements.
In this presentation, I will seek to evolve our understanding of race conditions to better match the evolution of web services. Looking at common scenarios, I will explore the impact of the race conditions, demonstrate strategies to identify race conditions and anti-patterns that can be avoided to mitigate the possibility of race conditions. Through these examples I hope to bring order and coherence to the otherwise unordered and messy world of distributed applications.
