On November 20, 2014, President Obama announced a series of immigration actions to address the need for immigration reform. A number of the measures aim to help foreign national workers and entrepreneurs. This workshop will cover the new immigration measures for foreign national entrepreneurs, professionals and students, and how they fit within the existing regime of visas for temporary and permanent employment in the US. The speaker will discuss:

President Obama’s new immigration actions as they relate to foreign national workers, students and entrepreneurs

the existing regime of temporary visas, such as the B-1, E, H-1B, J-1, L-1, and O-1, and the advantages and disadvantages of each

the paths to permanent residence, such employment, family and investment; and 4) common obstacles to obtaining a visa

Nadia Yakoob-Sway is a partner at SW Law Group, a boutique immigration law firm with offices in the Bay Area, New York, and Tokyo. She has been practicing immigration law for the last 14 years, and, having lived, worked and studied abroad, can empathize with the challenges of building a life in a foreign country. Her firm primarily caters to start-ups and emerging companies as well as investors and entrepreneurs. They also help with family-based immigration and citizenship matters. Nadia received her J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center in 2000 where she was Editor-in-Chief of the Georgetown Immigration Law Journal. She also received a M.Sc. from the London School of Economics, and was a Fulbright scholar at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France.
