Event Details

The spiral model (full name Incremental Commitment Spiral Model or ICSM) has its roots in large, million+ lines of code development efforts. It emphasizes iterative, feedback-driven, risk minimized development through short cycles.

Parallel Agile (PA) applies a simplified version of the spiral model one use case at a time so that teams can more easily deliver software in parallel. Its goal is to reduce the cost of communication between teams so that projects can scale-out efficiently. PA simplifies the ICSM cycles as Proof of Concept, Minimum Viable Product, and Optimization and suggests timing of a month per phase. With a large team of developers working in parallel, you can achieve significant schedule compression and deliver a large-scale project in 3 months.

This talk by Professor Barry Boehm of USC and Parallel Agile CTO Doug Rosenberg explains the ICSM principles and how they are applied within Parallel Agile to shorten schedules, improve quality, and lower cost.

Speaker Bios:

Dr. Barry Boehm is a USC Distinguished Professor and the TRW Professor in the USC Computer Sciences, Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Astronautics Departments. He is also the Research Council Director of the DoD-Stevens-USC Systems Engineering Research Center and the founding Director of the USC Center for Systems and Software Engineering. He was director of DARPA-ISTO 1989-92, at TRW 1973-89, at Rand Corporation 1959-73, and at General Dynamics 1955-59. His contributions include the COCOMO family of cost models, the Spiral family of process models, and the Theory W (win-win) approach for creating and evolving successful systems. He is a Fellow of the primary professional societies in computing (ACM), aerospace (AIAA), electronics (IEEE), systems engineering (INCOSE), and Lean methods (LSS), and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.

Doug Rosenberg (Doug@ParallelAgile.com) is the founder and CTO of Parallel Agile, Inc., www.ParallelAgile.com Doug has more than 30 years of experience in software engineering, including being CEO of ICONIX Software Engineering between 1986 and 2016. Since 2010 he has been consulting and/or volunteering with the USC's Center for Systems and Software Engineering. Doug is the author of three books on UML, three on Agile Development, one on Design Driven Testing, and two related to software processes. His latest book is Parallel Agile – Faster Delivery, Fewer Defects, Lower Cost.
