Docker, containers & AWS - this meetup shows you how use them effectively.

Talk 1: Heavy Containers
Mark Lavi (, Technology Evangelist,

In these early years of containers, "heavy containers" represent a typical approach which resembles virtual machines, includes the operating system user land, and desires configuration management. Does this starting point represent the opposite of container promise and the journey to immutable infrastructure?

Talk 2: Empire, the PaaS on top of AWS ECS
Mike Barrett ( & Eric Holmes (, Remind

In this session we will introduce you to a new self-hosted PaaS built on top of Amazon’s EC2 Container Service (ECS). Empire is an open-sourced project providing a mostly-Heroku-compatible API. It allows teams to deploy and manage applications in a method similar to Heroku, but with the added flexibility and control of running your own AWS ECS container instances. You will be introduced to this platform's private services security model, along with its ELB & Route53 based internal service discovery system. We will walk you through porting a simple app to Docker, then move on to deploying & scaling it in your personal Empire environment.
