Amtgard of Denver Meetup
A Little Info About Us The Duchy of the Iron Mountains Amtgard group meets every Saturday at Berkeley Park in Denver; we gather at the east side of Berkeley Park near the corner of 46th Tennyson. Fighting typically start around 1 p.m. with people trickling in throughout the day. There are many more people who show up than the few organizers here on Meetup. Class-based battlegames usually start between 2 and 3 p.m. and can run until 5 if everyone's having a lot of fun. Lots of people will stick around to fight and socialize well after, especially in the summer, and we might not disband until the sun sets. Anyone 14 and older is welcome to show up anytime and we'll be happy to get you a waiver so you can start swinging foam, that's all that's required. If you're concerned about age restrictions or have any other questions, please read the following FAQ section. *** (FAQ) Here are a couple of Frequently Asked Questions regarding our Meetups -What do I need to bring for my first time out? At a minimum: yourself. At a maximum: some friends and maybe some fun garb (period clothing). All participants are required to complete a waiver to participate. We keep blank waivers handy at the park. Other than that, there's no real requirement other than coming out and having fun! We have loaner weapons you can use and we have lots of folks who love training starting players. We have strict rules for field equipment (swords, shields, etc.), so we suggest getting to know our particulars on safety and construction before spending your hard-earned money on gear which might not be legal in our game. If you'd like to learn more about our stance on safety, weapon construction, armor construction, etc., you can download a copy of the Amtgard Rules of Play here: Amtgard Rules of Play V.8 (http://static.amtgard.com/documents/amtgard-rules-of-play-8.0.pdf). It is not required that you read this before coming out. It's sometimes easier to learn from doing as you ease into our world. -Is there an age restriction? / How old do I have to be to play? If you're between the ages of 14 and 18 then you need to have a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian on your behalf. Anyone younger than 14 may be allowed to play on a case-by-case basis under the same requirements and their parent or legal guardian must be present at all times. 18-year-olds are legal adults. They are responsible for themselves. -Are you a full-on LARP? Amtgard is considered a bridge game between reenactment groups and dedicated LARPs. Groups like the Society for Creative Anachronisms (SCA) and Dagorhir or Belegarth are more focused on a realistic physical combat aspect - shield stomping, shield checking/shoving, weapon grabbing, legal head shots - of the medieval-era. While there are differences between these groups (and differences between the groups within their groups, just like there are in Amtgard), they don't often engage in fantasy or role play and tend offer a closer experience to reality, especially regarding the SCA. Groups like Alliance Denver are at the opposite end of this range, engaging in long weekend events where role play is required, every player [usually] has a character backstory, and fantasy-based stories or quests guide activities. Their combat is also slower paced and based on a points system where the same strike from different people may have different values based on varying attributes. Amtgard is in between. We welcome role play (and we want to see more!) but it is not required. We fight full speed with [usually] lighter weapons and combat is a massive component of our game, but we also have class abilities which can help folks who don't fight well to still make a difference. Most of us have funny names and some of us have neat backstories, but we don't require this either. Our days typically start with melee ditch/line battles before engaging in class-based battlegames. There's subtleties and intricacies to all these games/sports/groups, so, please, understand that these comparisons are subjective. If you like how one of these other groups sounds, go check them out! -How do I keep in touch with you? / What if I have other questions? We have a very active Facebook group: Duchy of the Iron Mountains, Amtgard, Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/IronMountains/permalink/1134672079887403/?comment_id=1135630953124849&reply_comment_id=1135745883113356¬if_t=group_comment_reply¬if_id=1465439377577738) A lot of our members communicate on this page and often through a multitude of other Facebook pages which regularly discuss classes, Arts & Sciences (crafting), fighting, etc. We've been based on Facebook for quite a while and have cemented various task-specific pages. You can also message us here on Meetup (on the vertical banner to the left of the page, you can see a little envelope that says "Contact" beside it - just click that and you'll be able to start a conversation where we can respond directly to you) or by messaging us on Facebook via the page linked previously. *** We look forward to seeing you!
