Welcome to the Rocky Mountain Atheists!
The mission of the Rocky Mountain Atheists (RMA) is to be a safe and supportive secular community dedicated to serving society; to support those who have been marginalized or traumatized as a result of faith-based beliefs; and to provide and promote evidence-based learning opportunities.
RMA is so much more than a Meetup group! We typically host about 10 events per month, most of them free. Our activities include social gatherings, peer support, community service, and educational activities. A note about respectful behaviour:
We are an inclusive community of atheists, humanists, skeptics and secular freethinkers who welcome people of all backgrounds and identities.
We won't all agree all the time, but disagreement is no excuse for disrespectful behaviour. Disagreements should be resolved in a constructive manner and without personal attacks. Challenge ideas, not people. Do not insult or put down other participants. Harassment and other exclusionary behaviour aren’t acceptable.

·OnlineOnlineRMA Coffee Chat is an enjoyable, unstructured, afternoon conversation. Anyone can introduce an idea or ask a question and the group will jump in and discuss it. We are donating blood at the new Canadian Blood Services Clinic (100-207 9th Ave SW). Participants need to be at the clinic at 11am.

Designated complimentary parking for donors is available at the Calgary Tower parkade, just a 5 minute walk from the donor centre. There are entrances to the parkade on 9th and 10th Ave. Designated donor parking is on the west side on Level 6, near the elevator.

Conversion practices--commonly referred to as conversion therapy--constitute the damaging efforts to change queer individuals' sexual orientations and/or gender identities and expressions. Despite the common misapprehension that conversion practices are a thing of the past--in North America, at least--such anti-queer efforts persist and continue to wreak havoc on countless members of LGBTQ+ communities, particularly those in high-control Christian contexts. Wilson will present a broadened definition of conversion practices before discussing the prevalence of conversion practices in North America and why the number of reported cases is likely inaccurate. Wilson will flesh out the ways by which conversion practitioners seek the eradication of LGBTQ+ communities.
About the Speaker:
Lucas Wilson is an SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto Mississauga and was formerly the Justice, Equity, and Transformation Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Calgary. He is the editor of Shame-Sex Attraction: Survivors’ Stories of Conversion Therapy. His public-facing writing has appeared in The Advocate, Queerty, LGBTQ Nation, and Religion Dispatches, among other venues.
