Afternoon Tour of Atlanta BeltLine's New Historic Fourth Ward Park

This event is a production of the Atlanta Science Tavern.

Park along North Angier (look for The Masquerade on North Avenue) and make your way to the Basin opposite the gate to the Georgia Power facility.

The tour will start promptly at 2:30pm and last around 90 minutes. For those interested, we'll be heading over to Manuel's Tavern (http://www.manuelstavern.com/location.php) for drinks after the tour.

This is a fair weather event. A rain date will be scheduled in case it is canceled.

Afternoon Tour of Atlanta BeltLine's New Historic Fourth Ward Park

http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/3/0/6/event_221454022.jpegHistoric Fourth Ward Park (http://beltline.org/parks/historic-fourth-ward-park/) (H4WP) is perhaps the most visible sign so far of the transformative nature of the Atlanta BeltLine project. Dedicated in June 2011, it is a glistening oasis where there once stood little more than cracked asphalt, trash-strewn fields. The creation of H4WP has allowed the City to sell the old Sears Building, putting it back on the tax rolls, and has led to almost $400 million in private development in the surrounding area.

Join us as Kevin Burke, the Senior Landscape Architect for Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. (http://beltline.org/), shows us around this 17-acre open space that includes a stormwater detention basin, “gussied up” to not look like one at all, 34 kiloWatt solar photovoltaic installation, Atlanta's first skatepark, play spaces, an event lawn for concerts and a multiuse sports field. We will talk about park and urban design, storm water mitigation, economic development, ecology, and construction.

About our Guide
Kevin Burke is the Senior Landscape Architect for Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. and has thirty years of professional experience on a range of institutional, roadway, college and university, residential, and park projects. He oversees all day-to-day design and construction efforts for all public open spaces of the project. With the assistance of two very capable volunteers, Kevin is the lead organizer of ABI’s 3rd Annual Organic Land Care Symposium, which seeks to inform the public and practitioners about the path towards a more sustainable maintenance practice.

Kevin has a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree from Utah State University and is a NOFA (Northeast Organic Farming Association) Accredited Organic Land Care Professional.
