SF Atheists February Meeting
Every year, February 12 is celebrated worldwide as International Darwin Day. To join in this celebration of science and humanity, this month we welcome Uta Grieshammer, PhD, science officer with the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, to discuss the promise and progress of stem cells research. According to CIRM, "researchers are making tremendous progress, funding clinical trials to try and cure HIV/AIDS, type 1 diabetes, some aggressive forms of leukemia, macular degeneration, and sickle cell disease. This work is made possible by the people of California who voted to create the agency when they approved Proposition 71 in 2004. Because we get our funding from the public, we feel it's important to let the public know how that money is being spent and how it is already leading to important developments in medical research." Dr. Grieshammer spoke recently to the Atheist Community of Silicon Valley and Sunday Assembly Silicon Valley to rave reviews: "Fantastic talk! Dr Grieshammer's talk on what stem cells are (and are not) was exceedingly interesting and I learned a great deal", "Wonderful presentation!"
