Join the Atheist Contingent in the Gay Pride Parade

On June 26th a number of Bay Area atheist groups will participate in an atheist contingent in the Gay Pride Parade. We will stress the role that religion plays in rationalizing the oppression of the LGBT community. We will march for freedom and respect for all minorities. This community, along with women, are our natural allies. By supporting these communities we can gain allies and members. Let's show the Bay Area that we are serious about ourselves.

Please contact Larry if you would like to participate. Also we need from four to six trained contingent monitors for our group. The trainings start on June 7th, so please commit to helping us soon. Training sessions last one hour and are free.

Please bring some water as we will be marching for several hours.

We shall meet at 10:30 AM at Assembly Area K on Beale between Mission & Howard. Please allow time to deal with walking from the BART Embarcadero Station, etc. There is no nearby parking.

Look for the our banners: Atheist Advocates of SF, SF Atheists and East Bay Atheists. Don't hesitate to call Larry on his cell at[masked]-0571.

Anyone who has completed the monitor training and not yet contacted Larry should do so immediately.

Let's have some fun while we increase the community's awareness of who we are.

Excellent! We had 50 or so folks. We had signs. We had chants. What more could you ask for?

We had around 50 people in our contingent, and that was encouraging. Next year we should have even more if everybody who attended this year would bring along one friend or acquaintance. We received a lot of cheers along the way and only one instance where someone in the crowd was astonished that our contingent would be there in support of individual freedom.

It was lots of fun being cheered on by a crowd! Hated walking back tho.

Today was a fantastic thrill! Gonna do it every year. Where else do you get to dress as wild as you want and promote the messages closest to your heart while thousands of people cheer you on? Look forward to helping do even bigger prep next year.

Hi! I'm from Norman, OK and run the Norman Naturalism Meetup on Meetup.com. I'm here with my family on vacation. I would like to march with your parade contingent if possible, but I'm not sure if can make it over there. Will try! :)

It cost the groups about $370 to participate, but we are not passing that along to members. That is where those donations go. I was wondering about Randy's comments also.

Wait a minute... re: Randy P's "...lack of funds". What does it cost to participate? Am I missing something?

I will supply some custom signs. I print messages on paper that I tape to placards. If you want your own private signs, you should bring them. No group mentions other than SFA, EBA, AA & AASF.

Allen Barth and I attended the "Monitor Training" last Tuesday, so we are moving along. Let's get some more interested individuals to train and we can accommodate a large contingent in the Pride Parade.

    Muffin,
They have not given us that information yet, or it would be on the site and sent to everyone. They sent an email saying that they have to alter their plans for the parade because of construction; they expect to get back to us by "the end of the week."
