d3 fast and slow

Loggly has graciously offered to host our next meetup (with food and drink!) as well as a fun contest!

We will have two exciting talks:
Daniel Roesler - d3 on cheap smartphones
Daniel got his hands on the new Firefox OS phone and has been looking at d3 related performance on cheap mobile hardware. He has some interesting findings to share with us!

Victor Powell - DZ: dealing with 3d data in d3
Victor has been developing a new library for dealing with 3d data in a d3 like way:
with some sweet examples:
He will share his motivations and ideas behind the library!

6:30 - Doors open

7:00 - Contest demos and results

7:30 - Talks

8:30 - Socializing

Loggly would like to sponsor a quick visualization contest across either time series or faceted data sets.

Your visualization should fit in a 900x500px window, preferably submitted on (the way the d3 community shares visualizations)

Use any visualization method you like. Animation and interactivity are encouraged, and the bigger of the data set, the better.

Contact [masked] for any questions or to submit entries. Here are a few resources that you might utilize to help generate your data visualizations:

Time Series Data Sets:

Entrants will be presented on December 12th, at the beginning of the talk and take a vote to see who wins the following:

• Data Visualization with D3.js by Swizec Teller

• $50 Amazon Gift Card

Victor Powell's demo made me go 'ooooh, nice!'; Dan Roesler's demo made me go 'hmmm, I need to look at this more.
Victor's demo of 3d meshes in d3 is something I'm looking for a project to use on, really sweet.
Dan's demo of svg/d3 rendering on cheap smartphones shows the promise and limitations of d3 on small screens with relatively weak processors.
