(Alcohol consumption is optional) Beer and Philosophy Night is what I believe university should have been: intelligent conversation and friendly debate, preferably over a few drinks. My definition of philosophy is fairly broad ("the love of wisdom"), hence our discussions range over a wide variety of topics, from science to art to religion. We've discussed topics such as: Can capitalism be ethical? What is the nature of the self? Should we help other people (even if they don't "deserve" our help)? How can we create meaning in our lives? I attempt to emphasize the practical aspects of philosophy (although we tend to get closer to metaphysics by the end of the evening). All participants are expected to be civil, polite, and responsible. Discourteous conduct will be gently admonished, and such behaviour shall not be tolerated indefinitely.

Join us for intellectually stimulating conversation. NB: You don't need to consider yourself a "philosopher" (and you certainly don't need to have formally studied philosophy) to come out. I hold a very broad definition of philosophy ("the love of wisdom"), and welcome anyone who is prepared to be polite and have their beliefs questioned. The starting theme for this event shall be: ============================== Expertise. There is a sharp disagreement about expertise. Can experts be trusted? Should we base our decisions on the opinions of experts, when we do not (and perhaps cannot) fully understand the relevant information? On the one hand, it seems reasonable to rely on people with deep knowledge about a subject. On the other hand, experts have been wrong in the past, and may also not have the purest of motives. Perhaps it's better to trust our own conclusions. However, that may mean falling prey to the Dunning-Kruger effect. Furthermore, postmodernism trends to be suspicious of the very idea of expertise, calling into question any hierarchy of knowledge. ============================== Hosted on the 4th Friday of every month (with some scheduling changes for e.g. holidays). Peace, Laval
