What we're about

We will meet up to dedicate some time to writing our project. Shut up and write means dedicating time to writing in good company! If you RSVP that you are coming, then please arrive 10-15 minutes before the start of the Meetup. The facilitator will lead introductions and then the group will write for an hour. There will then be 15-30 minutes of social time to get to know each other and possibly discuss personal writing successes such as getting published or overcoming writing resistance in some small way. No critiquing, exercises, lectures, ego, competition or feeling guilty. So come, shut up and write!

This group is under construction and we are still looking for a convenient place to meet up regularly. A good place I found is Kaschk Café at Rosenthaler Platz or Atopia, we can discuss that at our first meeting in Café Atopia on Saturday.

Berlin Fiction Circle

Online event

IMPORTANT TO NOTE: We use the Meetup page as a way to advertise our group, however, we do not pay attention to the RSVP function. **You don't have to RSVP to attend, but if it is your first time, do make sure you sign up to our mailing list (https://berlinfictioncircle.com/mailing-list) so you know how/ where/ whether we are meeting, and you get a copy of the text to be discussed and our discussion rubric. CORONA VIRUS: now that restrictions are easing, we will be alternating between meeting in-person and meeting online (the online meetings have enabled some writers based outside Berlin to join us). The in-person meetings will be held at Tempelhof. For weekly updates on how and where we are meeting, join our mailing list. About the Berlin Fiction Circle Too often, writers operate alone and do not have the opportunity to share their work with others. The Berlin Fiction Circle is an informal workshop, modelled on U.S. Creative Writing programs, which gives writers this opportunity. We focus on narrative prose fiction and are usually a group of between eight and fifteen. How does it work? Every week, a writer who has submitted a text in advance (e.g. a short story or a self-contained book chapter) reads this out to the rest of the group. The writer is also asked to bring printed copies of the text, on which the rest of the group can make notes. After the reading, we take a few minutes to consider the text and develop a response. We then discuss the text together. A facilitator guides the conversation to ensure that it remains focused on elements of craft (we also advance distribute a copy of our discussion rubric to help with this). At the end of the session, annotated copies of the text (with compliments, suggestions, and constructive criticism) are returned to the writer. Spirit We want to be supportive, challenging, and encouraging, and to create a safe and harmonious environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their work and their thoughts. Submissions Policy We ask that anyone submitting include a draft of the text they want to have workshopped in their initial email. Texts should be no longer than 6,000 words. They should also be paginated and double line spaced, and sent as Word documents. We are interested in narrative prose fiction. It may be that none of our facilitators feels able to offer you a helpful workshop on the text you submit. Please don't be disheartened! We may still be interested in other texts of yours in future. Other groups may also be interested in your text. Anyone submitting should be a regular attendee. It is important to the spirit of the group that we participate in the workshops of others as well as in our own. It is also important that anyone being workshopped for the first time understands and is familiar with the spirit of the group. Copyright Please be aware that copyright on any texts we send out, and any texts we have sent out in the past, belongs automatically to the author, and is protected by intellectual property law. Time and Location We meet on Thursdays at 6 pm for a 6.30 start. Our meetings are currently held on a weekly basis and alternate between being online and in-person (the in-person meetings are held at Tempelhofer Feld). When we go back to meeting in person, this will be on a fortnightly basis, at m|a feine Kost on Kienitzer Straße. (You may be aware that our in-person meetings used to alternate between two locations, m|a feine Kost and Laidak. The reason we are no longer meeting at Laidak is that someone kept beating us to make a reservation there, and we cannot make a standing reservation. We would love to meet every week at m|a feine Kost, but they actually host a backgammon tournament every other Thursday. If you can think of anywhere else we could make a standing reservation, please let us know!) For weekly updates on how/ where/ whether we are meeting, join our mailing list.
