Lecture Bio

Laura Welcher, Ph.D. is the Director of Operations and The Long Now Library. For many years she has worked at The Long Now Foundation on building an archive of the world's nearly 7,000 languages, and creating a long-term backup of it — The Rosetta Disk, a microscopic analog archive that can last for thousands of years. Most recently she has created a wearable version of The Rosetta Disk and released a limited first edition. She will talk about principles in the design of long-term archives that can be applied to any storage technology, from the macroscopic to the nanoscale and from carvings on rock to data storage in DNA.
