What Is An API?
Presented by: Elliott Richmond - Senior Developer & Director of Square One Software Ltd & Cheltenham WordPress Meetup Co-Organiser
This talk came about from one of our own WordPress meet ups–when we used to meet in person – some of us would gather and chat about what we were currently working on, typically as developers we would often spout out an array of acronyms that would confuse some of our attendees, I remember being asked once, "What's an API?" so I decided this was a good opportunity for a talk!
This talk is an explanation of what an API actually is, how it works in a RESTful way, what we can do with one, and a look at some of the tools we can use to interact with an API. we'll also take a quick look at exposing the WordPress REST API.
About Elliott: Developing for the web since 1990, WordPress developer since 2005, loves the Command Line, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, PHP and pizza. Collaborator, Meet Up organiser and partner of a small agency who look after a plethora of client owned code. Drop by: https://www.meetup.com/Cheltenham-WordPress-Meetup/
> OUR GROUP DISCUSSION:
Further ideas and suggestions about the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to APIs and other WordPress subjects! No matter how simple (or complex!) we'd like to hear from you if you have questions or ideas to share!

IMPORTANT NOTES TO ALL
This is an online event hosted using Zoom. Once entering the Zoom waiting room the host will grant you access to the meetup. If you find that you are in the waiting room for a long time, please send us a message in the #meetup-birmingham room of the WP UK Slack or tweet us at @WPBhamUK.
Please be aware that we do intend to record the Meetup for future use and by joining the Zoom call you understand that the recording will show that you were in attendance. If you prefer, you can switch off your camera so that your face does not appear, only your name, (unless you have your own Zoom account and uploaded a picture of yourself for when your camera is off) although we encourage you to keep your camera on as it helps people engage with you.
We would also like to ask you to ensure that your audio is muted throughout the call to avoid distracting background noises during presentations and discussion sessions. Only unmute when you would like to ask questions or join in a conversation.
