• What we'll do

The ideal strum pattern for a particular song is neither obvious nor specified in the songsheet. After various examples, we will eventually figure out how to identify or prescribe the appropriate strum pattern for a song of interest.

In this session we will review the strum patterns for three chord songs: "Bad Moon Rising" and "Bye, Bye Love" and "Love Me Do" and other four-beat songs.

The hand that controls the timing, rhythm, syncopation, ... the groove is the one that strums, strokes, plucks, picks, taps, and knocks. Often the so-called "right hand technique" is overlooked in ukulele playing. People assume it comes naturally.

But it doesn't.

This one-hour workshop focusses only on the hand that does all of the above. Besides your basic down and up strokes, you will learn the different ways you can combine them, add accents, and the familiar "ukulele" pattern of more advanced players.

Please RSVP and ensure you can receive MESSAGE to get information about the method of payment. $20 per person via VENMO or Zelle (Bank of America) or $25 via PAYPAL. Doors open at 11:45 am to start promptly at Noon.

If you did not attend the previous STRUM workshops on 2nd and 9th December but would like to attend this one, please RSVP to request the handout.

The session will be video recorded for playback for private viewing by participants only. Handouts will be emailed to participants after the workshop to ensure full eye contact and focus on technique and exercises during the workshop.

What previous participants have said:
'A carefully thought-out session, covering the essential ground and presented by someone who is clearly passionate about music. It was nicely tailored to the needs of the participants. Very useful, and exactly what I wanted. It was a thoroughly enjoyable session. I would happily sign up for another one.'

'This is the class that you never knew you needed. But when you've done it, you'll realize you should have done it years ago.'

‘The handout is excellent, and the class was both informative and fun.’

'Anne Ku’s strumming workshop focused on an oft-neglected but essential part of playing the ukulele. She demystified the process by breaking down (and slowing down!) each strumming pattern and having us practice it repeatedly. She also applied each strum to a specific song or songs so we were able to immediately apply our new skills. Later she sent us a handout containing all the strumming patterns so we could reinforce the techniques at home. Best of all, Anne is a friendly and relaxed teacher who treats her students, even the rankest beginners, like musical colleagues. I can’t wait to take her follow-up workshop.'
