Toward a Clojure Dev Environment Maturity Model

Craftspeople care deeply about the work they produce, and this usually makes them care deeply about the tools they use. To become a master Clojurian, you typically have to invest some serious effort in mastering your editor or IDE of choice. While a lot of tool choice comes down to personal preference, we suspect that there are core capabilities that any good tool ought to be able to provide for developers as they progress from novice to expert.

In this conversation, we want to gather the collective experience from the local Clojure community about what features or capabilities matter most in Clojure development tooling. We'll tread carefully to avoid the holy wars defending anyone's position of the One Editor To Rule Them All, and instead focus on what features help us make fewer mistakes, shred high-quality code quickly, or just are a delight to work with. We will then arrange these features along a continuum from novice use to master use.

This will be a group discussion, so please come ready to share your expertise and thoughts on what makes for a great Clojure dev experience!

About the discussion leader:

Ken Smith, Ph.D. - Senior Software Engineer at ThinkTopic

Ken started his career in computational physics developing distributed astrophysics simulations, then moved onto statistical topic modeling and natural language processing. He is fascinated by how technology is shaping society and vice versa. Throughout his career, he has gained expertise in data visualization, DevOps, and design thinking. He holds a B.S. in physics from Bradley University and a Ph.D. in physics from Penn State.
