Stan Deetz’s philosophy follows the sentiment of Raymond Williams: "To be truly radical is to make hope possible, rather than despair convincing." His mini memoir, Between…, offers a deeply personal account of a girl with a boy’s body struggling with gender identity growing up in an isolated, conservative, religious, farm community in Indiana in the 1950s. Alone and living difficulties not yet having names. Deetz’ personal story is one of attempts to make a life that worked at different moments across a lifetime as a successful professional in an unchosen body. A story of choices made and not made, benefits and costs, and struggle (even while privileged) in contemporary society. At one level, a personal story, at another, one story of a struggle of our time posing questions to gender generally and relationships with those who are different. Using poems, vignettes, and autobiographic narratives, Deetz develops how gender complexities pose challenges to normative society and often question the very bedrock of one’s and others’ existence as human beings and their relations to others. It’s available from Transgender Press (an imprint of Perceptions Press) and on Amazon. ISBN: 978-1-998924-94-3 Paperback. His professional bio can be found at standeetz.org.
