What we're about

Love science and scholarly research? Curious about the world?

Meet with us every other Tuesday to listen to UCI researchers discuss their latest cutting-edge research on nearly every topic imaginable, from neuroscience and physics, all the way to humanities, social sciences, and the arts! Recent topics have included how artificial intelligence can learn to detect lung cancer, how butterflies see the world, why meth-addicted rats can’t get through rehab, and why the data show it really was a bad idea for your teacher to give you detention back in the 8th grade. There’s a new topic every meeting, and a researcher eager to answer your questions in the Q & A session. No, sorry, we can’t tell your 8th grade teacher she was mistaken. But ask us anything else!

We’re passionate about research, and we want to share what we’ve learned with you. We believe academic and scientific literacy are crucial in this age, and we’d love to discuss our knowledge and ideas. And since we work so many hours in the lab, we’d like to take a break and share a drink with you, too. Join us!

If you're a UCI graduate student or postdoctoral scholar interested in being a speaker, contact us here or at brewsnbrains@gmail.com!

Online event

Guest: Krithika Jagannath PhD Candidate in Informatics Donald Bren School of Informatics & Computer Science Topic and Abstract: Designing for Socio-Emotional and Mental Well-being in Online Play Abstract: Online multiplayer games like Minecraft mimic the offline playgrounds, only at a much larger scale. These playgrounds, both in real life and in online settings, are inherently social in nature. Players interact with each other and within the space socially -- self-organizing themselves into teams, playing with or against each other in friendly competitions, and encounter social conflict. In this talk, I will argue why online play-based settings are amenable as newer technology-mediated sites to help players, especially youth, develop interpersonal skills such as problem-solving, social and self-awareness, conflict resolution to name a few. I will also explain social conflict in games like Minecraft and how researchers and designers might harness the naturally arising conflict in video games to create learning opportunities for youth. I will briefly present a collaborative research study of a socio-emotional learning intervention. The intervention called “Survival Lab” was designed by my collaborators. I will present select findings from my research that looked at how adolescents (8-14 years) within a moderated Minecraft community responded to that socio-emotional learning intervention.
