• We've added an expert in baseball data analytics to the conversation.

• We've also changed the venue to accommodate the larger number of attendees (see above).

Event Description...

This event will be an informal conversation with Galen Carr (https://www.linkedin.com/in/galen-carr-22191a10), head scout for the LA Dodgers and Brian Mills (http://www.brianmmills.com/), a professor of sports economics and lead instructor on Data Camp's online course (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4VJbcb1b1M) on baseball analytics. Together with our members and local baseball aficionados, we will talk about how data has driven (and will continue to drive) the evaluation of talent in major league baseball-- aka "Moneyball"

Galen Carr offers a unique front row perspective on moneyball. He spent over a decade scouting for the Red Sox, during the golden period when Boston embraced moneyball, crushed the curse of the bambino (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curse_of_the_Bambino) and won 3 World Series. And we can only assume that data driven insights continue to guide him on his latest assignment with the Dodgers.

Brian Mills is a University of Florida professor whose main research focuses on managerial economic issues in sport. Brian has done extensive analysis of baseball performance data using R (particularly using "PitchF/X" data), is a frequent to contributor to the "Baseball Data with R" (https://baseballwithr.wordpress.com/authors/) website and played Div. 3 baseball in college.

Get ready for a very interesting meeting.
