Feature-flow: an agile practice applying two-tiered Kanban

Feature-flow is an agile practice that organizes work around units of value, called "features", rather than units of time. It's an application of two-tiered Kanban that groups tasks needed to implement features together to provide greater focus on completing features than a traditional Kanban board with independent tasks.

The presentation will discuss our experience at Zope Corporation in applying Scrum and our rational for replacing Scrum sprints with a process based on two-tiered Kanban. We'll look at the challenges we had with lack of tool support and our efforts with physical boards and an implementation built on Asana.

We'll look at a new open-source tool that implements feature-flow, including a demo. The demo will be open and attendees will be able to play with the board during the demo.

During the presentation we'll touch on some related topics like WAG estimation and self-organizing teams.

Jim Fulton

Jim Fulton is an independent developer and was the CTO at Zope Corporation for many years. At ZC, he and his team learned to apply a self-organizing development process focused on quickly and continuously providing value. Jim is a prolific open-source developer and Python contributor.

Jim was the lead developer of the Zope web-application platform, the ZODB object-oriented database, the Zope component architecture, the buildout project automation tool, as well as many smaller projects. Recent new open-source projects include the Valuenator tool that implements Feature-Flow and Newt DB, which combines the ease of use of an object-oriented database with PostgreSQL-based search.
