What we're about

NOW RUNNING ONLINE AND FACE TO FACE!

*PLEASE MESSAGE GROUP ADMIN FOR FULL INFO.*

Welcome to our group for anyone who wants to have French conversation! No matter what your ability level, you are welcome to join this group and come along either to our 'real-life' COVID-secure meetup on a Friday evening at the café, or the Zoom session for anyone who is unable to get to the café or would prefer not to.

We meet weekly to talk in French, build our vocabulary and learn from each other. We also sometimes meet on weekends or other weeknight evenings for picnics, film nights, gigs or other cultural events. These extra activities will be making a gradual comeback over the next few months now that coronavirus restrictions are easing, so please keep an eye on this page. I will post an additional event on this page whenever one of these activities is planned, so you will be able to RSVP and find out all the details.

All ages and levels are welcome in our group. I get a lot of messages from new members worried that they don't have enough French to join in, but we really are welcoming of every level from beginner right up to native-speaker. As there are always a mix of levels, people can just listen and join in when they feel comfortable. I am there most weeks so can welcome new members or those who are nervous about integrating into the group. Equally, if you are a fluent speaker you will find other confident speakers to chat to.

As well as this page here on Meetup, we also have a WhatsApp group which we use to contact each other, post the weekly Zoom link, arrange last-minute meets and share Francophone information. If you would like to join this group, please send me a private message with your mobile number and I will add you.

Finally, you may notice that you have recently received some messages about paying an annual subscription for this group. We recently lost our sponsorship, meaning that the annual subscription cost of approximately £150 is payable by me. After discussing with our regular attendees, it was agreed that we should remain on Meetup and continue to pay this, as this is preferable to moving to a platform with adverts. So, any members who are willing and able are encouraged to pay a £5 annual subscription to help cover this. Needless to say, we only actually need 30 people to contribute to have the costs covered! Any extra money will be saved for parties, events etc.

Please consider paying this if you come to the group regularly and would like it to remain on Meetup. Please do not feel any pressure to do this, and certainly do not worry about coming if you choose not to pay! Members will have no way of knowing who has paid and who hasn't; it's simply for me to be able to cover the cost of the annual subscription. I hope this makes sense and that you are happy with this arrangement. Again, please send me a private message if you have any questions or concerns.

I very much hope to see more and more of you as we (hopefully) continue to come out of lockdown and have the ability to mix and socialise once more. After such a horrendous year, I for one am very glad of the continued existence of our lovely group!

A bientot,

Anna

PS - Please note that the RSVP feature on this page is not an accurate depiction of who will be at the café each Friday - many people come along without RSVPing and others come who are not members on Meetup. This means that there will likely be more people at the meetup than the page suggests. If you are anxious about numbers or wish to know roughly how many people will be there, please send me a message and I will try to let you know.

I want to ride my Bike - Cafe, Bar & Workshop

Bonjour a tous!

Please come along to our regular evening conversation group at the I Want to Ride my Bike Café Bar! As mentioned in the main group description, we are now running the face to face session at the café (sitting indoors or outdoors) as well as a Zoom session online for those who cannot attend or would prefer not to. Please message me for further details of this.

For anyone who has not yet attended, the format is as follows:
We sit in the bar or outside and talk French for a few hours. It is very relaxed and there are usually a range of levels being spoken. It's quite acceptable to arrive any time from 6pm onward and stay for as long as you want - people come and go at whichever times are convenient for them. If you arrive before 6, just ask the server where the French group are sitting, and someone will arrive soon!

If you are a beginner, this is a great opportunity for you to listen to French conversation in real life, absorb some new vocabulary and make notes to learn new words and phrases. Please don't worry about being made to speak more than you feel comfortable with - you can just listen in until you feel like speaking.

If you're a more confident speaker, it's an opportunity to have regular conversation and maintain your skills. We're lucky to have lots of native speakers in the group as well as those who have lived in French-speaking countries, so there's plenty of opportunity for fluent conversation.

I hope to see you all at a meeting soon!

A vendredi,

Anna
