River Junction Campground, Camping, Hiking and Kayaking
Come out and Camp with your slacker Friends for a fun and relaxing weekend at river Junction. This campground is really nice, and remote, located in the eastern corridor of my favorite forest, CROOM. THIS IS A KIDS TRIP!!! YOU NEED TO MAKE YOUR OWN RESERVATIONS! River Junction is located right on the Withlacoochee River on the South side of Silver Lake. You can enjoy a paddle on the river, Take a 14 mile round trip hike to Hog Island, or if you feel like biking, you can take a short drive to Ridge Manor and bike the rail trail. I'll most likely lead a hike, with Tracy leading a paddle Sat morning. Friday night, come early and enjoy a happy hour on a real cool beach we found near the boat ramp...However, be discreet in your of beverage container, liquor probably isn't allowed. Due to the remoteness of the park, lets grill dinner at the camp ground. River Junction Campground is located within the Withlacoochee State Forest (Sumter County), less than one half hour northeast of Brooksville, FL. This campground is located at the junction of the Little Withlacoochee River and Withlacoochee River at the southern end of Silver Lake and has the following facilities: centrally located restroom and showers, and potable water at each camp site. The day use area has a boat ramp and picnic area. Recreational activities featured here are: fishing, boating, canoe trail, hiking and picnicking. Geography: The Withlacoochee River, Little Withlacoochee River, and Jumper Creek have all been designated as Outstanding Florida Waters, and each meanders through this forest which spans across 5 counties and exceeds 165,000 acres. Withlacoochee is a Native American word meaning "crooked river". This accurately describes the Withlacoochee River as it makes its 70-mile journey from the Green Swamp, in northern Polk County, to the Gulf of Mexico at Yankeetown. Complementing the natural water features are the open pine sand hills, dense woodlands, and canopied roads and trails. Tree species found on the forest include slash pine, longleaf pine, pond and bald cypress, maple, southern magnolia, hickory, and various species of oak. There is also an abundance of colorful wildflowers during the Autumn, including goldenrod, thistle, and blazing star. These natural features create excellent habitat for bald eagles, fox squirrels, gopher tortoise, white-tail deer, and turkeys, to name a few.

What we're about

Thank you for your interest in joining the Slackers.

Please note that there is a $20.00 per year dues. You can not attend any Slacker activity until dues are paid. You need to pay the Dues with-in 30 day of joining the group.

We are a group of outdoor enthusiasts that met in other Meetup groups and decided we would like to form our own group.

If you enjoy car camping, kayak day trips, kayak camping, day hikes or primitive backpacking - this just might be the group for you. We are planning to complete the Florida trail in section hikes.

We will tailor trips from novice to expert. As such, we do not put ourselves out there as experts. we are just your ordinary individuals who enjoy outdoor pursuits and expect the members of our group to take full responsibility to be prepared for all activities with their own equipment. Individual members will take full responsibility for their own safety.

As a member of this group we hope you will feel comfortable enough to make suggestions, critique trips, suggest trips - whatever. We want our group to be your group.
