This park isn't usually open to the public, but we'll have the opportunity to explore it this day. It's a mix of former farm land, woods, and streams which offers fun orienteering terrain. Come join us! See below for course details.

STARTS: Start any time between noon and 2:00 pm. (Everybody must be back to the start no later than 4:00 pm.) Feel free to arrive any time after 11:45 am.
COST: Maps are $5 each.
LOCATION: Mary B Stratton Park. 5841 Jessup Road, Richmond, VA 23234. Watch for the orienteering sign on Jessup Rd and turn right into the property. The entrance is on the right, just after passing a sign for "Jessup Meadows" on the left. If you reach Zion Hill Church Rd. on the left, you've gone too far. Follow the arrow orienteering signs through the park to the start/finish.
As always, instruction will be available for beginners or those who would like some help to get started. We can also offer some tips to those who've been out a few times and want to advance their skills a bit.
Bring your own compass, or borrow one of ours (on a first-come basis). Be prepared to leave car keys or an ID as a deposit when borrowing.
Dress appropriately for the weather and for travel both on & off trail. Water, sunscreen, and bug spray are also good items to bring along.
Feel free to post comments or contact one of the organizers if you have any questions!
Be sure to answer the instruction and map questions when you RSVP! This really helps us with planning.
*** Our meets wouldn't be possible without the help of volunteers. Please consider offering some of your time at this or another upcoming meet. ***
Two courses to choose from:
- A White (beginner/first time) course which is a traditional orienteering course which is completed in the numerical order indicated on the map. 11 controls, 1.7 km
- A Score-O course with a 90-minute time limit. Find as many of the 27 controls as you can within the time limit, in any order that you feel is the best route. You'll lose 1 point for every 2 minutes (or portion) that you go over the 90-minute limit, so be sure to have some way to track your time while you're out there. Approximately 5-7 km, depending upon route taken.
This used to be farmland, so there may be some old barbed wire in the woods. Efforts have been made by the Parks Department to remove as much as possible, but you may still encounter some. Not all is shown on the map. Be careful out there and watch your step! There is also green briar and blackberry in the woods and fields.
