Book Club: The World According to Monsanto

Lincoln Park Branch, Chicago Public Library

Monsanto has been in the news a lot lately. A recent court case found them responsible for illnesses and deaths associated with their weed killer Roundup, and more cases are being tried. But Monsanto has another public relations problem: the reputation it's cultivated around its practices with GMO's (Genetically Modified Organisms). As a matter of fact, Monsanto's reputation has become a huge issue for all of biotechnology, as the winds of public opinion on GMO's are somewhat tied to the behavior of this biotech behemoth. For our next book club selection, we're going to be reading "The World According to Monsanto: Pollution, Corruption, and the Control of the World's Food Supply" by Marie-Monique Robin. Rather than simply condemn Monsanto or GMO's in general, let's look at what exactly the company has done and discuss the merits and faults of this organization that has claimed to be helping farmers and been accused of bringing about potential the ruin of mankind. What's truth and what's fiction? Join us for what is bound to be a very lively discussion of the book and our opinions on not only GMO's as a concept, but their safety, utility, ethics, and ramifications.
