Next Gen Observability using Open Source Monitoring (Aloke Guha, OpsCruise)
Cloud native applications present a new set of challenges for monitoring and troubleshooting, including:
- More complexity with scaling and multi-tier abstraction
- More dependencies, including 3rd party PaaS, SaaS and APIs outside of your control
- More dynamism with frequent code changes and unpredictable workloads
These changes create enormous challenges for even the most sophisticated DevOps/SRE team to ensure performance and effectively isolate the source of problems. The CNCF community has developed an excellent open monitoring foundation, OpenTelemetry, for K8s applications with popular projects for metrics (Prometheus), logs (FluentD), traces (Jaeger) and flows (Istio) that represent a great starting point. However each of these tools is a separate silo of data that are not well integrated and lack context and an analytics framework. That all leads to more time consuming troubleshooting and increasing MTTR.
In this talk and demo, you’ll learn:
- How to unify and integrate popular CNCF tools (e.g., Prometheus, Loki, FluentD, Jaeger) into an Observability Platform
- Common K8s production issues (e.g., crashbackoff, container image errors, throttling, etc.) and how to resolve them
- Methods to predict imminent application performance issues in advance
Aloke is the Founder and CTO of OpsCruise. He brings extensive entrepreneurial experience from several enterprise sectors as well as experience in incubating new business in larger tech firms. Previous to OpsCruise, he was at Hitachi where he led many of their IoT and cloud initiatives. Prior to that, he was the founder of several big data and ML start-ups, including Creekpath (HPE) and Copan (HP). He is a recognized expert in AI/ML and distributed computing with 28 patents to his name. He holds a B Tech from IIT Kanpur and a MSEE / PhD from the University of Minnesota.
