National Day of Civic Hacking: government works best when it’s government by the People.

Founded in 2013, National Day of Civic Hacking brings together designers, data scientists, community organizers, and civic leaders to collaborate on technical projects that solve civic problems.

This year, Code for Philly is partnering with the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Open Data and Digital Transformation for a special weekend hack day all about data. Join us for “Turning Data Sets Into Insights: Visualizations, Storytelling, Analysis, and More” and explore data from the City of Philadelphia. These data sets will be your sandbox for the day--create visualizations, conduct an analysis, or try different methods or mediums to use the data to tell a story.

We want you to use this opportunity to do a deep dive into some of the interesting open data available to all of us from the City of Philadelphia. Form teams at the event or work solo. Kick around some ideas, make a map with 900 layers (okay, well, maybe not), see what happens. The most interesting bit of data wrangling may be shared via social media by the City, Code for Philly, or even Code for America. City employees and Code for Philly leaders will be on hand to answer questions, provide feedback, and, more importantly, bring you pizza.
