Code for Philly Hack Night & PAWS Project Kick-off

Details

This is a special edition of our regular hack nights where we will also be kicking off the PAWS project!

About the event:

Ready to hack for Philly? This is a special kick-off night for a brand new project, as well as a hack night for existing projects to meet in-person and get some real work done.

New to Code for Philly? The PAWS presentation is a great chance to join a Civic Tech project!

On a project already? This is also a no-frills night for projects to meet in-person and get some real work done.

Code for Philly and Civic Tech projects are all free, open source, and operate in the civic space. Sharpen your skills and help Philly at the same time!

To get started with Code for Philly, create a profile (https://codeforphilly.org/register), join us on Slack (https://codeforphilly.org/chat), and subscribe to our meetup page. We look forward to meeting you.

About the Project:

As the city's largest animal rescue partner and no-kill animal shelter, PAWS is working to make Philadelphia a place where every healthy and treatable pet is guaranteed a home. Since inception over 10 years ago, PAWS has rescued and placed 27,000+ animals in adoptive and foster homes, and has worked to prevent pet homelessness by providing 86,000+ low-cost spay/neuter services and affordable vet care to 227,000+ clinic patients.

This project seeks to provide PAWS with an easy-to-use and easy-to-support tool to extract data from multiple source systems, confirm accuracy and appropriateness and process data where necessary (a data hygiene and wrangling step), and then load relevant data into one or more repositories to facilitate (1) a highly-accurate and rich 360-degree view of PAWS constituents (Salesforce is a likely candidate target system; already in use at PAWS) and (2) flexible ongoing data analysis and insights discovery (e.g. a data warehouse).

Join us as we hold a kick-off meeting to discuss requirements and next steps. The project will require professionals and community members of all types, so we hope to see you there!

Don’t forget your computer! Code for Philly does not provide any devices, so if you need your computer to work be sure to bring it with you.

• Who is this event for?

This event is for those interested in joining a new Code for Philly project, as well as existing project teams looking to work on their civic tech projects.

• Do I need to be a coder?

No! We need civic hackers of all varieties. Healthy civic tech projects have developers, designers, community partners, project managers/owners, and need lots of help. If you’re an experienced professional, we welcome you to contribute your expertise whatever it looks like.
