• Free Plant burger day @ area Northstar cafes

    Location visible to members

Get out to your local Northstar Café on Earth day for a free healthy (for the most part) meal. Lines will be long so this may not be the best quick bite to eat during work lunch hour. But for those that are able to stay, we kindly suggest you wear your favorite vegan shirt and be ready to engage and give the people the 411 (and the 911 since things are kinda getting for realz) they may not yet know they need. BE SURE TO MENTION YOU WANT THE VEGAN OPTION AS THE BURGER IS SERVED WITH DAIRY CHEESE. A good rule of thumb is to pull out the vegan stereotype card and mention you are vegan every ten seconds as you get closer to the counter just to be safe. This is an open meetup to encourage all of us to take our not-so-vegan friends and families at your convenience. Thank you ahead of time for doing that!😉 LOCATIONS: 4015 Townsfair Way (EASTON) 109 South State Street, Westerville 7610 Sloan Way, Liberty Township 4241 North High Street 951 North High Street

  • VEGAN BOOK GROUP ~ Mind if I Order the Cheeseburger? by Sherry F. Colb

This month we will be discussing: Mind If I Order the Cheeseburger?: And Other Questions People Ask Vegans by Sherry F. Colb What about plants? Don't animals eat other animals? There are no perfect vegans, so why bother? If you're vegan, how many times have you been asked these, and other similarly challenging, questions from non-vegans? Using humor and reason, Sherry F. Colb takes these questions at face value and also delves deeply into the motivations behind them, coming up with answers that are not only intelligent but insightful about human nature. Through examples, case studies, and clear-eyed logic, she provides arguments for everything from why veganism is compatible with the world's major religions to why vegetarianism is not enough. In the end, she shows how it is possible for vegans and non-vegans to engage in a mutually beneficial conversation without descending into counterproductive name-calling, and to work together to create a more hospitable world for human animals and non-human animals alike. • VEGAN BOOK GROUP ~ Beating Hearts: Abortion and Animal Rights by Colb & Dorf

This month we will be discussing ~ Beating Hearts: Abortion and Animal Rights (Critical Perspectives on Animals: Theory, Culture, Science, and Law) by Sherry Colb and Michael Dorf. How can someone who condemns hunting, animal farming, and animal experimentation also favor legal abortion, which is the deliberate destruction of a human fetus? The authors of Beating Hearts aim to reconcile this apparent conflict and examine the surprisingly similar strategic and tactical questions faced by activists in the pro-life and animal rights movements. Beating Hearts maintains that sentience, or the ability to have subjective experiences, grounds a being's entitlement to moral concern. The authors argue that nearly all human exploitation of animals is unjustified. Early abortions do not contradict the sentience principle because they precede fetal sentience, and Beating Hearts explains why the mere potential for sentience does not create moral entitlements. Late abortions do raise serious moral questions, but forcing a woman to carry a child to term is problematic as a form of gender-based exploitation. These ethical explorations lead to a wider discussion of the strategies deployed by the pro-life and animal rights movements. Should legal reforms precede or follow attitudinal changes? Do gory images win over or alienate supporters? Is violence ever principled? By probing the connections between debates about abortion and animal rights, Beating Hearts uses each highly contested set of questions to shed light on the other. • VEGAN BOOK GROUP ~ Riding on the Power of Others: A Horsewoman's Path to...

Riding on the Power of Others: A Horsewoman's Path to Unconditional Love by Ren Hurst. Ren Hurst finds her way to horses as a teenager, following a turbulent and painful childhood. They are her saving grace, her first experience of pure joy and freedom. She soon becomes a passionate horsewoman, intent on riding her way to the top. Her ascent takes an unexpected turn when compassion becomes the key component to success after she discovers an entirely new paradigm regarding equine understanding and practices. This understanding leads her to walk away completely from riding and training horses and into a world where relationship is all that matters. These innovative currents of change reveal themselves to be demanding and controversial, but also exceptionally rewarding and unavoidably far-reaching into Ren's personal life. She embarks on a wild quest of radical transformation, finding an ever-deepening compassion for herself and all life around her. This book is the story of a woman's metamorphosis through her falls, rises, and life-changing insights, under the wise and benevolent guidance of a powerful animal.
