Beginners' 4-Week Improv Comedy Course
(Polite request bit): This is a fun, but demanding course, and your fellow participants rely on you to be up to speed every week from the previous week's lesson. Therefore, please do not sign up unless you can make all four weeks - thanks! • What we'll do Improvised comedy is a type of theatre, where all the characters, scenes and actions are made up in the spur of the moment, inspired by a start word given at random. Think of the 1980s/90s TV show 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?' and you'll get the idea! This meetup provides an introduction to improv via the 'shortform' style of improvised comedy. • What to bring Please wear comfortable clothes as we can move around a bit. You may wish to bring a notepad and pen to take notes. • Important to know Due to the nature of the 200-year-old building we operate in, you may need to climb up one or more steep set of stairs to get to the workshop room, which can differ each week. While we welcome attendees with differing physical abilities, you may wish to consider this before RSVPing, as this is out of our control. While we do not charge for the course, nor our in-house workshops, a voluntary donation of £3-5 per session, is always most welcome.

What we're about

Comic Sans Script is Cheltenham's biggest improvised comedy group, free and open to all, regardless of ability. We have regular open (and advanced) workshops, practising making up scenes and characters on-the-spot from suggested words, to create scenes and play games in the style of 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?'.

We do also perform locally, and are veterans of Cheltenham, Birmingham and Bath Comedy Festivals. We'd love to have you pop along!

We operate three types of events:

1. Our FREE Wednesday beginners workshops. These operate on an 'intake cycle' basis, where you can join other beginners at the same time once a quarter, to learn basic improv skills and games over the following six weeks. Please try to attend all the sessions to make sure you get a solid grounding.

2. Regular workshops on Mondays and Wenesday for 'full members' (those who've completed our Beginners Workshop). On Mondays we rehearse 'longform improv' and on Wednesdays 'shortform improv'. We ask for a voluntary £3 per session to cover costs, and you can attend as you please, however we may request a certain regularity of attendee if we're covering a particular format for a few weeks.

3. Regular shows. We operate our 'main', quarterly(ish) paid show (performers subject to audition), and offer a 'supported show' format for everyone else who has completed a four-week intake cycle with us, where you can perform, supported by more experience improvisers. We also do ad-hoc gigs as requested at festivals and events.

4. We also began and host Cheltenham Improjam - an open-to-all shortform improv games jam that takes place on the first Sunday of every month: see https://www.facebook.com/CheltenhamImprojam... (https://www.facebook.com/CheltenhamImprojam/) for details.
